What is a Slab Leak?

The term “slab leak” refers to a leak underneath a slab foundation in your home. It can be a water line break, or a sewer line break, and can quickly become a very costly plumbing problem, as it can effect your foundation, walls, and inside furnishings and flooring.

Why Do Slab Leaks Happen?

Many times, a slab leak can happen and continue for some time before you notice it, allowing it to cause cracks in your walls, and slab, as well as causing mold, and other unseen issues over time. Slab leaks can cost you thousands of dollars if you do not act quickly to repair them.

How do I know if I have a slab leak in Coppell?

Testing for a slab leak happens in different ways based on the type of slab leak.

  1. To test for a water slab leak, can be as simple as turning off all the water in your home, including the hose bibs outside, and check your water meter. If it continues to run, you have a water leak somewhere.
  2. To test for sewer slab leaks can be more involved. Our Coppell slab leak plumber performs what is called a “static test”, which entails pulling all commodes, and sealing them temporarily, and filling the system up with water. At that point, the plumber will watch for drops in the system. If the water level falls, there is a compromise in the sewer system.

What If I Have A Slab Leak?

If it is determined that there is a water or sewer line leak, the next step is locating it. Schrader Plumbing keeps top of the line equipment for locating leaks, as well as having years of experience in finding and repairing these leaks.

Once the leak is located, the next step is to determine the best repair available. Many times, we will suggest re-routing at least part of the line, to keep slab and flooring damage to a minimum. This generally entails accessing the pipe at 2 ends, and running a new line in the wall, or overhead. If this is not possible, the plumber will have to either jackhammer enough of the slab to replace the bad/broken line, or tunnel under the home to replace it.

What damages can a slab leak do?

In severe cases, the slab and flooring can give way and flood the entire ground floor, destroying floor coverings, cabinets, furniture and appliances. When that happens, foundation repair is only one of many serious problems. Leaks under the slab can remove the soil and cause the slab to cave in. When the slab fails, the weight of the concrete breaks the plumbing lines beneath, causing a rush of water into the home.

Do not gamble with the well being of your home in Coppell if you notice:

  • Hot spots on the floor
  • Hear water running when all faucets are off
  • See the meter spinning when all faucets are off
  • High water bills
  • Water coming out from the sides of your slab
  • Cracks in foundation, or walls
